"THE SOUTH INDIAN RESTAURANT IN THE HEART OF ZÜRICH"
Mühlegasse 14, 8001 Zurich, Switzerland.
Designing an Indian restaurant interior with a calming atmosphere and a focus on South Indian aesthetics, especially Tanjavur paintings and Kerala murals,  creating a serene yet culturally rich environment.

Color Palette:
To establish a tranquil ambiance, I opted for soft green and blue tones, Oak wood, and muted gold. These colours are  complemented by bright yet muted colours of Kerala murals , which evoke a sense of calm and add richness to the space. Light natural wood  elements are incorporated into furniture and wall acoustic panels to balance the overall look.

Kerala Murals
Kerala murals, typically done in earthy tones of red, ochre, green, and yellow, are more minimalistic but equally detailed in style. These murals are  directly onto feature walls  in different areas of the restaurant. Their depictions of Hindu mythology, nature, and animals can create a peaceful and meditative atmosphere. To blend the traditional with the modern, we have placed these murals in dining corners.
Tanjavur Paintings
Thanjavur paintings, known for their intricate gold leaf work and vibrant colors, can serve as a focal point in the dining area. These traditional paintings, often depicting Hindu deities, scenes from epics, or South Indian royalty, are framed soft gold and displayed on walls.   To ensure a cohesive look, we have used  subtle, warm lighting to highlight these artworks, enhancing their rich colors and gold accents.
Furniture:
For furniture, we used simple, clean lines to maintain an uncluttered and calming feel. light wood, such as Oak wood, with minimalistic designs, fits well with the traditional artwork. Cushions and upholstery in shades of blue, pinks and maroon, complement the paintings while adding comfort to the seating.

This combination of calming elements, with traditional Tanjavoor paintings and Kerala murals, ensures the restaurant not only serves food but also offers a cultural and sensory experience, making the space inviting and serene.
